Museum Moderner Kunst Kärnten

How MMKK and xamoom created an always-accessible audio guide — and why it feels personal, perhaps despite (or even because of) AI.

Overview

The Museum Moderner Kunst Kärnten (MMKK) isn’t just another museum to me. It’s a place full of personal stories: My daughter’s birthday party in the shadow of contemporary masterpieces, Summer evenings at the Open Air Cinema with my wife.  And yes — “Drachenjagd” (dragon hunt) with my kids in the arcades.

So when I had the chance to work on a digital project with MMKK, it felt like coming full circle — bringing technology into a place already filled with connection.

Challenge

MMKK has an impressive collection of Austrian sculpture, much of which is permanently displayed in the arcaded walkways of the historic castle courtyard.

But how can a museum make art accessible outside of opening hours, without relying on printed brochures or requiring visitors to install an app?

The goals were clear:
 • Provide access to information 24/7, not just during guided tours
 • Ensure barrier-free use for all age groups
 • Offer multilingual content without cluttering physical spaces
 • Keep the system simple, fast, and user-friendly

Solution

Together with MMKK, we developed a mobile audio guide powered by xamoom — available anytime, with just a quick scan.

Visitors now enjoy:

  • Audio tracks with rich stories behind each sculpture
  • Detailed background info on artists
  • High-resolution images and close-ups
  • Multilingual content via automatic language detection
  • All delivered directly in the browser — no app required

The tour covers three floors of the open-air arcades, allowing anyone to explore a cross-section of Austrian contemporary sculpture independently, interactively, and at their own pace.

It’s a museum experience that lives — even without stepping inside.

Partner

This project was realized in close cooperation with MMKK, the Carinthian State Museum, and the team at xamoom in Klagenfurt. A regional collaboration with a shared vision: making contemporary art accessible to everyone, anytime.

Results

• Art is now available around the clock, even on holidays and Mondays

• Visitors explore content in their own language and at their own pace

• No app, no login, no hurdles — just scan and go

• Museum staff can easily update content or add new works and formats

The guide transforms static sculptures into living narratives. It empowers people to engage with art spontaneously — even if they’re just walking by with an ice cream.
